ABOUT US

A SHORT HISTORY OF HAVERING SINGING FOR THE BRAIN 2020

Singing for the Brain has been running in Havering for over 10 years. It was run for a number of years by the Alzheimer's Society.

In 2019 the Alzheimer’s Society decided they could no longer finance the groups anymore. This could have meant the groups would have to close down, but our committed Volunteers and a number of Carers decided the groups must continue, and In January 2020 we become an independent, not for profit, group.

We are dependent for our continued survival upon attendance donations taken on admission to our groups, and on occasional donations from other sources.

We welcome all our old and new members and hope you will all continue to come along, get support and have a great time.

Although our Committee and volunteers are not professionals we have a wealth of experience should anyone need advice.

WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR £5 DONATION

What you get for your £5 donation is: Tea, Coffee, soft drinks and a nice selection of biscuits and cakes.  in a welcoming environment.

After a welcoming chat and a cuppa,  GEORGE, our resident  compare Guitarist/Singer  at both the WED and THUR  groups, will  relate any important information, invite attendees join him in a  sing-along, or sing a solo song; Congratulate any attendees with a birthday that week, by way of  getting all attendees to sing 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' and present a small birthday cake, and there are sometime additional activities such as quizzes.

We do not currently have a 'George' at our MON group, but there will be someone there - i.e. A Volunteer or the professional entertainer - to announce any important information and announce any birthdays.

(We currently have a pool of entertainers that provide a one hour session at all three groups, on a  rota basis.)

The professional singer for that day will then provide an hour of song, and everyone in invited to  take to the dance floor.

You can join in with the singing and dancing if  you so wish, or simply sit back, enjoy music, have another cuppa and have a nice chat with the other attendees.

In these respects, our groups not only offer support and information, but provide ongoing music, encouraging people with Dementia to SING along to the songs with their Carers and Volunteers. This is a fundamental activity on which Singing For The Brain 2020 was built.

The groups are also very like a welcoming Social Club. See attendees testimonials

WHO OUR GROUPS ARE FOR

Our groups are run by our  Groups Organizer along with a  team of long-term, dedicated, Volunteers.

The groups are open to anyone with Dementia - Alzheimer's, Vascular, and the other less common forms.

You do not have to live in the borough of HAVERING to attend one of our groups, but all attendees with Dementia have to be accompanied by a relative, friend or Carer for the group sessions.

THE VALUE OF OUR GROUPS

Research has long shown that Music, particularly singing, can elicit emotions and memories and help provide a link to a person's past and promote interconnection with Carers and others with Dementia, and there are many studies that suggest that music also delays cognitive decline and promotes brain plasticity in the elderly brain. This is why the Singing For The Brain groups were set up.

Apart from the value of the social, singing, music and dancing  aspect, our groups are also information and support groups, as we also provide a range of Dementia literature and an experienced listening ear if you need to talk. We also have day outings every year to places of interest, theatre, etc.

HEALTH & SAFETY

We have full insurance cover for all our groups, and we ensure that our venues are a safe place for people to come along to.

In the pandemic, we abided by all the government H & S rules and regulations.

When the easing of the majority of the current Covid 19 rules takes place,  we will still take the  precautions of  checking that all attendees have evidence of  having had BOTH  COVID-19 vaccinations, and we will methodically take everyone's temperature before they are allowed to enter the group venue.  Should any attendee have a temperature suggesting  possibly COVID-19, they will not be allowed to enter the venue, and will be advised to  contact their G.P.  immediately.

DISTANCE SUPPORT

If you cannot get to one of our groups for any reason, you can always call one of our  support people LISA, BEN  & CAROL, for a chat.

LISA is our paid worker who co-ordinates the groups. Lisa became a Volunteer after losing her Dad to Alzheimer's and was a Volunteer for 6 years before taking a paid post.

BEN was a Carer who lost his partner Janet recently. He is the main  person who took responsibility for picking up the Havering groups, when the Alzheimer's Society could no longer fund the Singing For The Brain  groups.

CAROL  was also a Carer who  recently lost her husband Ken, and has been a committed Volunteer for a long time.

And If you would be interested in starting a group like ours in your area,  Lisa, Ben and Carol, would be happy to give you some insight and guidelines on what is needed to start one.
